Roselle Park was originally the southern portion of Union township, comprised mainly of farmland. The railroad was the main contributor to its development. The first train ran on January 1, 1839, on a line from Elizabeth to Somerville. By 1862, a village had developed near the railroad station; and by 1882, streets had been laid out north of Westfield Avenue. In 1882, the Charles E. Stone store, on the corner of Westfield Avenue and Chestnut Street, became the first electrically lighted store in the world. At the turn of the century, Roselle Park had 1000 residents, 225 houses, three schools, three fire stations, a business center with several hotels and some light industry. By the start of the 20th century, there was industrial growth along the railroad, the most notable being the construction of a 20,000 sq ft building for the production of commercial wireless equipment for the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company of America. In 1917, the factory doubled in size to handle the increased war-time demand for the wireless. When the war was over, the company was bought by the Radio Corporation of America, who broadcasted there in 1921 as WDY, the first licensed station in New Jersey. Builders began meeting the demand for small, inexpensive
suburban houses; and front-gabled houses, bungalows. capes
and hip-roofed colonials were constructed. Most building
lots in the town had been developed by World War II, and
open land along the perimeter was developed soon after the
war |
