Roselle was originally part of the Elizabethtown tract, site of English colonization in 1664. The "King's Highway", which is present day St. Georges Avenue, served as the southern border of town and as a main route of many colonial travelers. Following the American Revolution, Roselle was primarily a farming area, but it was transformed into a residential community after the Elizabethtown and Somerville Railroad was laid in the 1830's. In 1865, the Roselle Land Improvement Company was instrumental in selling property in the area, and hence, the name Roselle. In the 1880's, Thomas Edison chose Roselle as the home of
Thomas A. Edison Company for Isolated Lighting. In January,
1883, Roselle became the first town in the United States to
be wired for electricity. The First Presbyterian Church
dates from 1869, but still uses the original lightolier that
made it the first church in the United States to be lit by
electricity. |
