The Hillside area was first inhabited in the late 17th century by families from the Newark and Elizabethtown settlements. The northern section became known as Lyon's Farms and the southern as Woodruffs Farms. For years after the Civil War, the Hillside community continued to be predominantly agricultural. The decade following the war also saw the beginning of Hillside's era of residential, small lot development. In 1913, the growing population of Hillside voted to
secede from the still-rural Union Township. The new township
continued to grow through the years, and today, Hillside is
a densely developed community with a variety of residential
neighborhoods and industry located along the railroad and U.
S. Highway 22. It is also very convenient to Newark
International Airport and New York City |
