West Caldwell, formerly known as Franklin and Westville, was incorporated as a borough in 1904. In 1982, the designation as borough was changed to township. West Caldwell supports a well-balanced, suburban community consisting of residential homes, three main industrial tracts, and commercial and retail business areas, including four shopping centers and eight banking institutions. The community consists mainly of single-family, owner-occupied homes complimented by parks, two community pools, and a free public library. West Caldwell also operates recreation programs in a joint venture with the community of Caldwell.
