Verona is located in a valley in the Watchung Mountains and was incorporated in 1907 after secessions from Caldwell. The community is primarily residential, but a few areas have been set aside for industrial and commercial use. Verona Park, part of the Essex County Park System, provides residents with a number of recreational activities including tennis, boating, jogging trails, and winter ice skating. The Annin Flag Company has called Verona home since 1918. The company's flags have been planted on both the north pole and south pole during the expeditions of Perry and Byrd, as well as the climb to Mount Everest. Annin's flag was also planted on the moon in 1969 expeditions of Apollo 11 and Apollo 12.
