This smallest community in Essex County was incorporated in 1902. In the late 1800s, Anthony Drexel of the Philadelphia banking family acquired the estate of General William Gould to form a planned residential community. Toaday, the borough is considered one of the prime examples of a purely residential community with housing styles ranging from Victorian to International.
